Heavy Machinery Specification Standards & Measurement Rules

Operating Weight vs Payload

Operating weight represents the total mass of the machine ready to work (standard counterweight, cab, rubber tracks, and full fuel tank). In contrast, payload / capacity is the maximum safe working load the machine can hoist without tipping.

Auxiliary Hydraulic GPM

Auxiliary hydraulic flow determines which attachments can run efficiently. While static attachments (buckets, thumbs) require low flow, dynamic rotary tools (augers, mulchers, trenchers) require minimum continuous GPM ratings at 2,500+ PSI.

Tonnage Class Standard

In the excavator industry, "ton" universally refers to metric tonnes (2,204.6 lb / 1,000 kg). A "2.5-ton mini excavator" weighs approximately 5,500 lb, while in skid steer loaders, tons often refer to US short tons (2,000 lb).
