What happened

Greenstone Resources Corporation expanded its fleet in the Philippines with eight new-generation Volvo A40 articulated haulers. The machines were supplied by Civic Merchandising, Volvo CE’s distributor in the country, and are intended to strengthen material movement and day-to-day hauling operations.

Why articulated haulers are used

Articulated haulers are designed for routes where rigid trucks or highway vehicles may struggle with soft ground, uneven surfaces, gradients and changing site conditions. Their articulated steering and all-wheel-drive systems can provide mobility in demanding terrain. The A40 class is commonly used in quarrying, mining, earthmoving and infrastructure applications where production must continue across variable haul roads.

Fuel economy and cost per tonne

Greenstone highlighted fuel consumption, reliability and hauling capability. For a production fleet, fuel use should be considered per tonne moved rather than only per hour. A truck that burns more fuel but carries a larger payload or completes faster cycles may still deliver a lower cost per tonne. Accurate evaluation requires payload data, cycle time, idle time, road condition, rolling resistance and operator behavior.

The significance of an eight-machine order

A fleet purchase of eight units gives the operator the opportunity to standardize maintenance, parts, training and telematics. Standardization can reduce complexity, but it also increases dependence on the chosen dealer and model. Parts availability, field-service response and component support therefore become central to the value of the purchase.

Operator environment and safety

New-generation articulated haulers commonly place strong emphasis on visibility, braking, stability monitoring and operator comfort. Long hauling shifts can expose operators to vibration and repetitive cycles, so seat quality, cab layout, climate control and easy access affect both productivity and fatigue. Site-level safety still depends on road design, traffic management, loading practice and speed control.

Sustainability claims in context

Greenstone connected lower fuel consumption with its sustainability objectives. Reduced fuel use can lower operating cost and direct carbon emissions, but the result should be measured against actual production. The most useful metric is often fuel or emissions per tonne moved over a defined route and period. Telematics can help track this, provided payload and operating data are accurate.

Dealer support and lifecycle value

Civic Merchandising emphasized long-term value and machine availability. For equipment operating far from major service centers, dealer support can be as important as the initial specification. Preventive maintenance planning, parts stocking, technician availability and condition monitoring help determine whether the fleet meets its production target.

What to watch next

Future performance information should focus on availability, fuel per tonne, payload consistency, tire life and maintenance cost. Comparisons before and after the fleet expansion would help show whether the new A40s deliver the expected improvements under Greenstone’s actual site conditions.
