Komatsu Chattanooga Marks 40 Years and Builds Its 60,000th Excavator

What happened

Komatsu’s Chattanooga Manufacturing Operation celebrated four decades of production and the rollout of its 60,000th excavator. Employees, customers, community members and public officials attended the event. The milestone machine was a customized PC490LC-11 built for D.H. Griffin, a contractor active in demolition, environmental and infrastructure work.

A long-term manufacturing footprint

The Chattanooga operation began in 1985 as Komatsu’s first manufacturing facility in the United States. It has since become part of a broader North American production and engineering network. The campus manufactures medium-size hydraulic excavators, articulated haul trucks and forestry equipment while also supporting product development, engineering and supply-chain activities.

Why 60,000 machines is meaningful

A cumulative production milestone is more than a ceremonial number. Reaching it requires stable supplier relationships, repeatable quality systems, workforce training, manufacturing investment and demand across several market cycles. Excavators are complex machines with structural, hydraulic, electrical and powertrain systems that must be assembled and tested consistently. The PC490LC-11 milestone machine

The PC490LC-11 is a large crawler excavator used in demanding earthmoving, demolition and heavy construction applications. For a contractor such as D.H. The restored Ochi Loader

Komatsu also unveiled a restored WA450-1 wheel loader known as the Ochi Loader. The machine was originally built in 1988 and was associated with Shohei Ochi, the facility’s first Japanese general manager. Restoring an early machine connects the current operation with the plant’s manufacturing history and provides a physical record of how equipment design, cab systems, hydraulics and production practices have changed.

Workforce and community significance

Manufacturing facilities of this scale support more than assembly jobs. They depend on welding, machining, quality control, logistics, engineering, maintenance, purchasing, safety and technical training. A 40-year presence also means the operation has developed relationships with regional suppliers, schools and community organizations.
